20 Megatons Greenhouse Gas Reduction by 2030

Journey

Carrefour together with the supplier partners listed below, started a journey to monitor and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions related to the products sold in the stores to reach 20 Mton GHG reduction by 2030. Carrefour and partners have already begun joint emissions reduction programs. This platform shows the steps made as well as the methodology developed to monitor progress towards the 20Mton reduction objective. In addition, relevant best practices from the partner suppliers are presented.

Food Transition Pact

In addition to the target to reduce emissions from own operations (scope 1&2) by 30%, Carrefour has set a science-based target to reduce emissions from its value chain (scope 3) by 30% in 2030 compared to 2019 levels. The target reduction ambition is in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Scope 3 emissions represent ~98% of Carrefour’s total carbon footprint, with emissions from purchased goods and services covering ~72% of the total. To achieve this ambitious target and align the business with the Paris Climate agreement, Carrefour together with its suppliers must reduce a total of 20 million tonnes of GHG emissions in 2030 compared to 2019.

However, tackling scope 3 emissions is one of the greatest challenges for any company, given the complexities of value chains. A challenge that can only be achieved by working together with suppliers. To tackle this challenge Carrefour together with a wide range of suppliers developed the Food Transition Pact, a joint commitment to profoundly transform the food system and offer customers healthy and planet-friendly products at an affordable price. 38 international suppliers have already joined the pact and are working with Carrefour on four priority issues - climate, packaging, biodiversity and health/nutrition.

What is the Greenhouse Effect?

At the launch of the project, 12 supplier partners provided data covering their emissions in 2019 and their 2030 targets to test the approach and methodology. The results are shown in the figure below.

Participating suppliers represent 5% of all emissions from fast-moving consumer goods in 2019 as part of all purchased goods and services.

By almost 1 Megaton of CO2e, from a total of 20 Megatons targeted, is expected to be reduced by 2030 based only on these participating suppliers’ existing emission reduction targets and their share of sales to Carrefour.

With the project, we will mobilize further action aiming to foster additional reductions both from partners who have already committed to participating in the 20 Megatons goal and new ones who we hope will join in the future.

Methodology

The emissions of the products sold by Carrefour are calculated by using a monetised emission factor. This factor multiplies spends in certain product groups with a specific emission factor. The sum of all these calculations provides a first estimate of the climate impact of the products sold. With this project, we provide more detail to the calculation by working with more specific emissions from the suppliers. By collecting this supplier data annually and comparing to previous years, progress towards the 20Mton objective can be monitored. The methodology is in line with the globally accepted and used GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard.
